Yunnan, circa 1900This unusual table comes from Yunnan province in southern China, and the ornate carvings are typical of furniture from the region. The front apron in particular includes some lovely detail in carved relief, depicting vases of flowers and other items designed to show the status of the owner. The front stretcher includes the 'S' shape detailing common in Ming and Qing furniture, while the subtly curved legs also end with beautiful carvings in a scrolling pattern. Once used as a side table for serving food and wine the table today would make an elegant console in a reception room.
