Shanxi, circa 1900This pair of elegant side chairs is in the classic 'yoke-back' style that developed very early on in China and changed very little for centuries. In China they are referred to as 'Official's Hat' chairs as the top rail resembles the hats of Chinese mandarins. The high backs give a sense of dignity and stature, while the upwardly tapering legs and curved back splat, ending in the head rail, give a fluidity to the overall design. This particular pair of chairs is from Shanxi in central China. The style is very simple, without the carved decoration that is frequently seen on other similar pieces. The original black lacquer is largely intact, though worn especially around the foot rests. The price shown is for the pair of chairs.
