Beijing, circa 1900This little low table was used in Beijing, where it would have been placed on the 'kang' - a raised platform heated from below that was used in Chinese homes in the north and used for serving tea and other refreshments. Like most everyday furniture from the capital, it is made from elm wood and in a classic, simple style, with 'horse hoof' feet and a 'waisted' top. Traces of the original dark lacquer are still visible, but now largely worn to reveal the wide grained elm wood below. Great today as a little square coffee table.
