Shanxi, circa 1880This little square table is quite typical of tables that were used throughout northern China, placed on top of the heated 'kang' platform that served as the main living space during the colder months, and used to served food or tea. The style is very simple, with classic 'horse hoof' feet and 'waisted' top. The table is in elm, and the original lacquer has been stripped back to show the wood's more natural colour and grain. Great today as a little coffee table.
