Shaanxi, circa 1750This wonderful console table is one of the older pieces in our current collection. It comes from Shaanxi province in central China and has the distinctive carvings of furniture from the region. The three drawers are each in heavy carved relief and still have the old ring handles. Carved spandrels at the top of the front legs add further detail and interest to the design. The table would once have been finished in a bright lacquer and probably painted, and traces of the original finish are still visible in places. Once used as an altar table, it would work perfectly in a reception room, with useful storage provided by the three drawers.
