Qinghai, circa 1850This unusual large altar table is from the western Chinese province of Qinghai. The shape is exactly as it was when the table was made over a hundred and fifty years ago, with its deep waisted top and low, carved apron. The front of the apron still shows its original paintings, with a 'double happiness' simple central to the design. The thick black lacquer is still in place, but worn to leave a beautiful, rich patina.
