Gansu, circa 1880This beautifully shaped table is from southern Gansu, and like most furniture from the area is made from walnut. The wood has a lovely warmth and colour about it and this piece would fit in easily as a console table in a modern home. The table has slightly curved legs, supported with S shaped stretchers, while the feet are a slightly chunkier version of the classic horse hoof shape. On top of the table are some clear scorch marks, suggesting that the table may have been used at some point to hold offerings to ancestors.
