Gansu circa 1800This stunning table is from Gansu province in western China, where much of the furniture produced was made from the local walnut wood. It has a 'plank' top extending over recessed legs, with everted flanges at each end in the form of scrolls- a common motif in Qing dynasty furniture. The stretchers which butt up to the underside of the table top are beautifully carved in a 'humpback' shape, while between the legs at each end are further intricate carvings in a classic 'ruyi' cloud head design. The wood itself has a lovely rich tone and the table top shows the signs of its age and use over the years as a platform for offerings to ancestors. This is a very striking piece that would work wonderfully today as a large console in a reception room.
