Beijing, circa 1880This pair of large chairs is in the 'Southern Official' style that developed hundreds of years ago from the earlier 'Offical's Hat' (or 'Yoke-Back') armchair. The arms, rear stiles and top rail are all rounded, joined at the ends to give a very smooth, graceful form, while there is some simple carved detail on the aprons and footrests. Each of the central backrests shows a circular double happiness symbol in carved relief. Traces of the original dark lacquer are still visible, but this has now largely worn away to leave the natural pale wood underneath. A beautiful pair of chairs that will add interest and elegance to any reception room.
