Shanxi, circa 1850The beautifully detailed pair of chairs are another fine example of a common style used throughout China for centuries. Reserved for the most important house guests or for ceremony, horseshoe chairs were always made in pairs. The dark lacquer on these two is original, now worn away especially on the seats. Each backrest has two beautiful open carvings - the upper one showing two scrolling dragons, while the central one depicts a 'kylin' (Chinese unicorn), symbol of auspiciousness and second in rank only to a dragon. The spandrels and aprons below each seat are also wonderfully carved.
