Beijing circa 1900This piece is typical of the little tables that were placed on a daybed or 'kang' (the heated platform in the main living area of northern Chinese homes) and used to serve food and drink. The waisted top and little cabriole legs are very common on these tables, but this one has additional detail in the form of the simple carvings on each apron, as well as the scroll motif on the feet. The table is made from elm wood and is still in its original lacquer.
