Gansu, circa 1900In keeping with much of the furniture from the western province of Gansu, this beautiful table is made from walnut wood. The style is fairly simple, with the carved supporting spandrels providing the only decorative element. This piece would once have been used as an altar table to hold offerings to ancestors, and the top of the table shows burn marks consistent with its use. Today its width and narrow propotions would make it ideal as a striking console in a hall or reception room.
