Shaanxi circa 1780Over two hundred years old, this little table or coffer is from Shaanxi province in central China and, with its decorative panels in carved relief, is typical of furniture from that region. The solid top and frames are in elm wood, while the lower panels are in cypress. The two upper drawers would have been present when the table was produced but the lower four drawers have been added more recently using the original panels. The space behind them would therefore have been accessible only by removing the upper drawers, and would have been used to store money and other valuables. The lower drawers are all beautifully carved, including two phoenixes on the left and right. The table top has a number of burn marks, suggesting that it doubled as a shrine to ancestors.
