Szechuan, circa 1900This wonderful piece was originally a window panel in a home in the south western Chinese province of Szechuan. The central square carving and upper and lower circular carvings are beautifully worked and still in excellent condition. Each one shows a battle scene with warriors on foot and on horseback. These main carvings are surrounded by further intricate detailing, including bats and other symbols of good luck. Panels like this, particularly with carvings in good condition, are now difficult to come so when we saw this in Shanghai on a recent visit we snapped it up. Great mounted on a wall and lit to show off the carvings and unusual shadows behind.
