Qinghai, circa 1880This large, low cabinet from Qinghai province would be perfect in a modern home as a stand for a television. The narrow doors in the centre of the cabinet are typical of the region, while the six drawers add practicality. The red lacquer is still largely intact, though worn in places particularly around the lower apron. The simple carvings on the side spandrels give a more elegant shape to an otherwise large, solid piece.
