Shanxi, circa 1750This wonderful cabinet dates from at least the early Qing period and is probably even older. The lacquer, hardware and paintings are all orginal and in excellent condition. The thick black lacquer is worn and cracked but still largely intact, while the paintings in red and gold are faded but still clearly visible, showing figures in costume from around the late 17th century. In addition to the original paitnings, it is unusual to find the original hardware still in place in such an old piece and, while blackened over time, the brass handles and back plates are still in good condition. It is now rare to find such an old cabinet so well preserved so this is a particularly special piece. It has two shelves inside (the only recent addition) with a 'secret' compartment behind the lower fixed panel, accessed by removing a shelf inside.
