Qinghai, circa 1860The intricate carvings that form a frame around the front panel of this beautiful cabinet are absolutely stunning, finished with black lacquer behind them to provide a striking contrast with the red lacquer doors. The carvings are entirely original and show a bat positioned above the two central doors - a common symbol of good luck in China, while flowers and branches form the remainder of the design. The panels either side of the central doors have been adapted recently to provide two further doors, making it easier to access the space inside. The hardware has been replaced but the red lacquer finish is original, now a little worn at the bottom of the doors. This is a very special piece that could be used either as a TV stand or as a real statement piece in a dining or living room. It has one full width shelf on the inside.
