Qinghai, circa 1860This is another wonderful example of the lovely painted furniture that originates from Qinghai province in the far west of China. Cabinets and trunks from the region were commonly finished in either red or black lacquer, and decorated with beautiful paintings of family possessions, flora and fauna. The piece still has its original paintings in subtle pinks, creams and greens against the worn black lacquer, while the door hardware is also original. Like most Qinghai cabinets, it would originally have had just two doors in the centre, with solid panels either side. In this case the two outer panels have been converted into additional doors, making the cabinet more practical as a modern day sideboard.
