Gansu, circa 1860The style of this type of cabinet, with its carved side spandrels, is sometimes referred to as a 'butterfly' shape - the butterfly being an important symbol in China for happiness and long life. The cabinet is in walnut with burl wood doors, which gives an unusual pattern to the wood grain. The shaped feet and extended lid are typical of western Gansu furniture. The hardware is original and the cabinet has one shelf on the inside.
