Shaanxi Coffer

Shaanxi, circa 1800
A little plainer in style than much of the heavily carved, ornate pieces that originated from Shaanxi province in central China, this piece still has some lovely carved detail on the side and bottom spandrels. The raised frames also add extra detailing. The original lacquer has almost entirely worn away, but some traces of the red colouring are still visible on the front panels.
