Gansu, circa 1880Other than the hardware, which has been replaced recently, this beautiful piece is entirely original, from the worn red lacquer finish to the Chinese calligraphy and monochrome paintings of flowers on the doors and front panels. Similarly to pieces from neighbouring Qinghai province, the cabinet has two doors set centrally within the front, giving access to the full space inside. The side spandrels are nicely carved, giving an elegant profile to an otherwise solid piece. The lacquer around the bottom apron and feet is particulalry worn, with the darker wood showing through underneath.
