These beautifully decorated boxes are old but the paintings have been redone, albeit to maintain the aged appearance of the originals. The lacquer finish and distinctive paintings are typical of those seen on wooden chests produced in the city of Pingyao in central Shanxi province. They depict characters from Chinese legend - the top of each box showing the lady of the house receiving visitors, while the sides and back are painted with a simple bamboo design. The size of each box and the paintings may vary slightly from the one shown here, which is given as an example only.
