Shanxi, circa 1920Certain cities within the province of Shanxi in central China became well known for particular styles of furniture and painted designs. The monochrome landscape on the front doors of this piece were the trademark of furniture from the city of Pingyao in the centre of the region. Pingyao was an important commercial centre in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties and developed a strong identity during those periods. Quite possibly at a separate time in its life, the top and sides of the trunk have also been painted but in very different style - these paintings show flowers in a slightly cruder style. With its stand with classic 'horse hoof' shaped feet, this is an unusual piece that would make a nice side table or perhaps a stand for a TV.
