Gansu, circa 1900Chests of drawers were almost never used in China as clothes were generally stored in cabinets and trunks. The two lower drawers on this piece are therefore almost certainly more recent additions, and the space behind them would originally have been accessible only by removing the upper drawers. The thick, worn lacquer and delicate paintings on the drawers are original, and the chest has the shaped front feet that are typical of so much of the furniture from the western province of Gansu. With its thick, solid frames and carved side spandrels, this is a very unusual piece that would work wonderfully in a bedroom or as a dining sideboard.
