Qinghai, circa 1880The front of this piece would once have been a solid panel, used for storing valuables and accessed only via the upper drawers. It has been adapted more recently to add the lower drawer, making it more practical for today. The coffer still has its original paintings of flowers, as well as the artist's inscription on the lower left hand side. The side spandrels and bottom apron and feet are nicely carved, and the extended lid has its original reddish finish.
