Beijing, circa 1900Our camphor chests would have been used in Chinese homes to store blankets, clothes and other items. Camphor was commonly used to make trunks and chests from early on in China due to its attractive wood grain and because its aroma acts as a natural insect repellent. The top of this particular piece is made from a type of camphor known as tiger skin, the most prized type of camphor due to its distinctive, highly attractive colour and grain. Great as a blanket trunk in a bedroom or use it as a coffee table.
