Qinghai, circa 1900This deep, red lacquer chest is from Qinghai in western China. The brass clasp is new but the lacquer and monochrome paintings are original, and while the lacquer has worn on the top of the chest from constant use, the front has stood the test of time well. The paintings are still very clear, the central panel showing four boys in a garden apparently under the supervision of their tutor. The inside of the trunk is decorated with further paintings of flowers. Great for storage and a nice height to use as a side table next to a sofa or bed.
