Shanxi, circa 1850These large, imposing armchairs date from the mid 19th century and are a wonderful example of the classic Chinese horseshoe chair. Almost always made in pairs, these chairs would be placed in a reception room in a Chinese home, with the style and proportions designed to impress. They would be reserved either for ceremonial occasions or for the most important house guests. This pair has some lovely detail on the back splats in carved relief, as well as further carving along the rear spandrels and on the front apron below the seat. Once finished in red and black lacquer, the colour has largely worn away to show the elm wood beneath. This is a truly striking pair of chairs that would still look wonderful in a reception room today. The price shown is for the pair.
