Gansu, circa 1860This beautiful piece shows the distinctive style of much of the furniture from Gansu in western China, with its 'deer shaped' feet and shaped spandrels. It is made from walnut, but with burl wood panels on the front of each of the seven drawers, giving a distinctive random wood grain. Coffers like this were used to store valuables, and the lower section was often only accessible by removing the upper drawers. The size and proportions of this particular piece make it ideal today as a stand for a TV, or as a wide coffee table.
