Walnut Side Table

Gansu, circa 1850
This simple side table still has its original rich, warm colour. Like much of the furniture from western Gansu it is made from walnut, a wood in plentiful supply in that region of China. In this case the top panel is in burl, and the rippled, crackled wood adds real character. A beautiful piece that would sit well in any reception room.
