Gansu, circa 1860This low coffer is a perfect size in a modern home to be used as a stand for a TV. It would have been used to store documents and family treasures, with the space below the three drawings providing a secret storage compartment. The coffer is from Gansu province and has the deer shaped feet common in furniture from the area, with carved spandrels adding extra decoration. The colour is original, with the dark lacquer now worn in places to show the lighter wood below.
