Beijing, circa 1900This style of chair is know as a 'Southern Official's Armchair' and is thought to have first developed in the southern province of Jiangsu. The rounded top rail is joined to the ends of the two rear stiles and the arms are joined at the ends to the supporting posts, giving a more fluid appearance than the earlier 'Officials' Hat' chairs. This particular pair is from Beijing and made from elm wood, the dark lacquer now worn particularly around the foot rests and top rails. Each chair has some nice detail of scrolling dragons in carved relief on the back rests.
