Shaanxi, circa 1850Furniture from Shaanxi province in northern China was usually quite ornamental, and in particular would include ornate relief carving. This lovely table is an excellent example, with some wonderful carving on both the two larger upper drawers and the three smaller drawers below. This type of table was usually used in Shaanxi as an altar table to hold offerings to ancestors. While it would originally have been lacquered, it has more recently been stripped back to the elm woods natural colour.
