Shanxi, circa 1900This unusual table comes from the central western province of Shanxi, where it would have once been used in a temple for offerings to ancestors. The two drawers are beautifully decorated with flowers in carved relief and the table also has carved spandrels at each upper corner. Once finished in a dark lacquer, the table has been stripped back to reveal the natural elm wood beneath. This is a rare and interesting piece that would work well today as a very unusual console table in a reception room.
