Beijing, circa 1880Wedding baskets like this were given as part of the traditional wedding customs leading up to a marriage. They would be filled by the groom and friend with cake, oranges and other food as well as candles and gifts such as gold jewellery from the groom's parents. The baskets were tiered in removable sections to keep heavier items in the bottom and lighter towards the top. As in most cases, this one is made from bamboo, the top of the lid decorated with a phoenix for good fortune.
