Shanxi, circa 1900This superb piece is from Shanxi province in central China and still has its original finish and hardware. The central panel between the two original sets of doors has been converted into an additional door, and the cabinet has four drawers above. The original doors and drawers would have been secured by circular lock plates, and the areas where these were placed is still visible. What is particularly striking about this piece are the paintings. These are all original and show figures from Chinese legend on the doors, with flowers decorating the drawers. The paintings are in in black against the brown lacquer surface of the cabinet, and while faded the wonderful detail is still very much intact. An unusual piece in excellent condition that would grace any dining or living room.
