Shanxi, circa 1830Pieces like this, in a simple 'square cornered' style with two sets of doors, are often referred to as double chests. This is a beautiful example, coming from Shanxi province where so much wonderful painted furniture was produced, and dating from the early 19th century. The paintings of flowers and birds on the doors would once have been much brighter, but the colours are now muted leaving a more subtle, warm tone. Like most similar furniture from Shanxi, the cabinet is made from elm wood. The thick dark lacquer and paintings are original, but the door hardware has been replaced. There is a removable shelf inside each of the sections inside.
