Gansu, circa 1880This beautiful piece is quite typical of much of the painted furniture produced in the northern and eastern parts of Gansu province. Furniture from this area would normally be made of fir or, as in this case, pine wood, and brightly lacquered and decorated. This particular cabinet shows the original paintings on the doors of children playing, with the surrounding red lacquer contrasting against the outer black lacquer frame. The two bottom drawers are decorated with paintings of flowers, though these have worn over the years. The drawers themselves as well as the doors have been added recently, converting what were once fixed panels, while the original lid in the top has been sealed. The cabinet includes a removable shelf inside each section.
