Shanxi, circa 1950The second of two matching cabinets in our current collection, this piece dates from the middle of the 20th century, and originates from Shanxi province in north central China. The only difference between the two cabinets is that the bottom apron of this one is decorated in carved relief. The cabinet is old but has been refinished and repainted in a traditional style, while the bottom panel has also been converted into two doors. The paintings of vases, scrolls and other items are typical of the large cabinets produced in Shanxi for centuries, while the outer frame is decorated with 'double happiness' symbols. Similar cabinets with the original finish and paintings are now becoming difficult to find and so increasingly expensive, but these two represent the next best option and at a more reasonable price. The cabinet has one removable shelf inside the upper section.
