Qinghai, circa 1900This type of piece, essentially a cross between an altar cabinet and a bookshelf, is known as a 'Fo Kang'. As suggested by the protruding frames at the top of the cabinet, originally it would almost certainly have had an upper section with more divided shelves, used to display statues and other items. The three drawers at the top are most likely recent additions, although the lacquer and paintings on the front are original. Similarly, what were once fixed panels at the bottom have been converted into the central, far left and far right doors. When it was first made the cabinet would have had just two sets of doors, making it more difficult for unwanted hands to access valuables contained in the other sections. The doors and shelves are framed with a simple carved trim and decorated with paintings of flowers - still clear against the black lacquer background.
