Shanxi, circa 1860This striking cabinet originated from Shanxi in central China around 150 years ago and the style and paintings are typical of the region. The black lacquer doors and frame contrast beautifully with the carved red lacquer side spandrels, one of which is a recent replacement as the original did not survive the years. The wonderful paintings are original, now in faded gold, and show two ladies in a garden of pagodas. These are set within a classic scrolling pattern on the side and bottom frames. The two upper drawers are also decorated with a scrolling motif, and the cabinet has a single shelf inside.
