Mongolia, circa 1900Mongolian furniture is similar to Tibetan furniture in that the pieces tended to be quite rudimentary in construction but brightly painted. The colours were usually in a pallet of greens, yellows and reds and common themes were flora and fauna. On this little cabinet the two doors, separated by a removable central post, are decorated with animals within a circular frame, surrounded by flowers. What appear to be two rats, the first animal in the Chinese zodiac, adorn the lower panel. Made from pine, the dark lacquer is now quite worn in places and the two door handles are a recent addition. Simple in style, with the doors fitting directly into the frame on wooden dowels, the cabinet's relatively small, narrow size makes it perfect as a side table or next to a bed.
