Beijing, circa 1860Most large cabinets like this from Beijing and north east China tended to be quite plain, but this one was decorated with paintings of landscapes and flowers, as well as some beautiful carved detail on the bottom apron. The paintings are entirely original, and still visible though now faded against the dark lacquer surface. The thick lacquer itself has worn, leaving a crackled, unusual patina. Inside the cabinet is a fixed shelf with two small drawers, a further shelf below and a 'hidden' compartment behind the lower panel. A removable central stile divides the doors.
