Qinghai, circa 1860This wide cabinet is quite typical of pieces produced in Qinghai, with a set of small doors set centrally between two normal panels. Designed originally to stop thieves gaining easy access to valuables held inside, this feature can make these pieces a little impractical for modern use but gives them their character. The finish on this cabinet and the paintings of flowers on the doors and front panels are all original, and the carved side spandrels and bottom apron add further decoration. Three lower drawers add more easily accessible storage space. This piece would make a highly unusual sideboard, or would be great as a stand for a large TV.
