Qinghai, circa 1880This wide, low cabinet is from Qinghai in western China. The finish, paintings and hardware are all original. The two central doors are decorated with paintings of flowers and give access to the full space inside the cabinet. There are also two small drawers at the top left and right. Cabinets from Qinghai were almost always made with two relatively small doors positioned in the centre, making it more difficult to access the outer parts of the space inside and so deterring would be thieves. This piece is a lovely example, and its low height makes it idea today as a TV stand.
