Shanxi, circa 1900Cabinets like this are often referred as coffers as they were used to store valuables and family possessions. The two lower drawers are most likely a more recent addition originally being fixed panels that provided secret compartments accessed by removing the shelves inside. The cabinet is quite simple in style, with the extended lid and carved spandrels adding interest. The lacquer is original, now worn to leave a lovely patina, and a new layer of varnish has been added to restore and protect the finish. Great today as a sideboard or for living room storage.
