Datong Cabinet

This simple, solid cabinet comes from Datong, an ancient city in northern Shanxi province. Furniture from that part of Shanxi tended to be more functional than decorative, and this piece is a good example. It is unusual in that most similar pieces have been made narrower at some time in their lives whereas this one still has its deep proportions. It also still has its original brass hardware.
