Beijing, circa 1900Chests like this one from Beijing were used in the home to store money and other valuables. The top part is divided into two sections accessed via thick half board lids, while two small doors open into the bottom section, with a removable central stile between the doors. The once bright red lacquer is original and is now worn away particularly on the lower left side to reveal the elm wood beneath. The hardware on this piece is original. Great as an usual sideboard.
