Gansu, circa 1860This large cabinet, with its beautifully carved sides and feet, would make for an unusual sideboard today. It comes from Gansu province in north western China, and the red lacquer finish and paintings in black and gold are original. Each panel to the side of the doors depicts a warlike figure on horseback inside a circular frame, while the paintings on the doors are of the more usual vases and ornaments. The central doors give access to the full space inside.
