Shanxi, circa 1900This style of large display cabinet, with a single shelf above the two doors, was referred to as a wanli cabinet. It would normally have been used to store books or documents. The shelf is framed with simple carving and the whole piece is topped with an extended lid a feature common in Shanxi province where the cabinet originates from. The thick, deep red lacquer is all original and has clearly worn away in parts, leaving a rich patina. There is one shelf inside.
